Robot Update

I haven't posted about the threat of robots recently, but they've been popping up on my radar.

First, we're just a couple of weeks away from ComBots Cup V, where killer robots are training against one another for their eventual uprising. Obviously a few will have to sacrifice themselves along the way, but that's the beauty of their plan. They're robots. They don't care. Plus, they use US to come up with more deadly ways to kill. Good going, nerds.

But at least at this point, they still need us to make them. So we've got that going for us. You know, if people would just stop making them.

That was what I thought until last night.

I was watching Phil Plait's new show Bad Universe last night while Phil was live tweeting the event. It was a really cool episode about aliens and it was fun to hear some of the behind-the-scenes stories from the making of the show. I was getting pretty tired, so I almost turned it off at the end, but I'm glad I didn't, or I would have missed this little bit of information.

Plait said that while alien life forms are probably not coming to destroy us, they might create some kind of self-replicating machine (read: robot!) that could do the job. No problem -- that's still pretty science fictiony.

Except that it's not. Because of these guys.

Yes, the guys at MakerBot Industries are making robots that make things. And hoping to eventually self-replicate.

Plus, a lot of their stuff is open source, which means it's out there for everyone. Even the aliens.

I don't know what is wrong with these scientists. Stop with the self-replicating killer robots and get working on stuff that really matters like hover boards and light sabers.
