However, I had a chance to preview the upcoming Christmas special that NBC's Community is airing tomorrow night, and I've got to say, they did a pretty good job.
The creators have done it in stop-motion animation, reminiscent of old holiday classics like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Santa Claus is Comin' to Town. In this episode, Abed (the Aspergers kid who tends to see everything through a movie or television world-view, played by Danny Pudi) is in the search for the meaning of Christmas. He wake up in a stop-motion animation fantasy, so his classmates (Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Chevy Chase, Yvette Nicole Brown & Donald Glover) enlist the help of Professor Duncan (played by the always hilarious John Oliver) to help snap him back into reality. In the meantime, they visit "Winter Wonderland," a place in Abed's imagination where they search for the meaning of Christmas.
The absolute best part of this episode, hands down, was the music. They did a spectacular job of spoofing traditional Christmas movies and the cast did a truly delightful job making them come to life (so to speak!).
The show does get a wee bit schmaltzy at the end, but overall, it's the quirky, snarky sensibilities that I've come to enjoy from Community. This show continues to make me laugh (I particularly liked the "lock down" episode a few weeks ago -- fantastic!), and their Christmas special definitely made me break out laughing a few times. If you enjoy Christmas specials, you'll definitely want to check this out!
Community airs Thursday nights at 8 PM EST/7 PM CST. Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas airs tomorrow night (12/9).
Disclosure: I was not compensated for my review of this show, however, I will be entered to win Season 1 of Community on DVD or a chance at a $50 gift card from One2OneNetwork.com.
